Early Game Zerg

I got this straight from my awesome strategy guide.

This is pretty basic.

1. Build Overlord at 10/10 Supply Count
   
2. Create and extractor with one of your drones, to drop to 9/10, then create a Drone to reach 10/10, CANCEL Extractor and place on Minerals, wait for Overlord at 11/10.
   
3. 12/18 create a Spawning Pool.
   
4. Once Spawning Pool is finished make a Queen right away.
   

Sexy! 11/10 supply

Anyway, now for serious discussion.

What exactly is the use of the extra drone(s)? I haven't tried it yet. Do you double up the drones on minerals or something?

My build (numbers denote control levels before the action is taken):
6/10 - Drone
7/10 - Drone
8/10 - Spawning Pool
7/10 - Drone
8/10 - Overlord
8/10 - Drone, goes to sit by a vespene geyser
9/18 - Overlord finishes, spawning pool finishes seconds later
9/18 - 6 Zergling (if you time the previous morphs right, you will have all three larva up when the pool finishes)
12/18 - Extractor
11/18 - Zerglings finish, rush begins (2:30 into the game)
11/18 - Drone (The extractor will finish morphing just before this drone will)
12/18 - Drone
13/18 - Drone
14/18 - Queen
16/18 - Drone
17/18 - Drone
18/18 - Morph two spine crawlers, spawn a creep tumor with queen's starting energy, tech lair
13/18 - Zerglings probably died by now. Early game is over, begin mid-game.

I tried doubling up drones on my minerals and, lo and behold, they actually did alright! I always thought that bit about "3 drones to a mineral patch or vespene gas extractor is optimal" bit was a mistake (three is quite obviously best for vespene, it's the mineral part I didn't believe), but there seems to be some truth to it.
